If Christianity is dumb as many Atheists think, how did it succeed to be so widespread?

I'm an Atheist myself but I'm wondering what are the factors that promoted the spread of Christianity over many parts of the world?

    >If Christianity is dumb as many Atheists think, how did it succeed to be so widespread?

Because people in general are also as dumb as many atheists think.

More seriously, there were a number of factors that contributed to the unprecedented spread of christianity. To begin with, christianity was actually a very progressive religion for its time. Surrounded on all sides by primitive pagan beliefs about ancient god-kings and animal spirits and naked muscle-men holding up the sky and so on, christianity offered a much simpler, more abstract, more straightforward belief system. I mean, consider, which would you rather hear out of the following:

    1. 'The world was founded by the four great kings, who split the lands between them and fought a century-long war, before becoming the respective kings of the sky, the Earth, the sea and the underworld. After them came a great hero, Uclaeus, who fought the wicked five-headed demascea and freed the people of Artrubius from seven hundred years of torment, and so now everyone who dies goes to Vaenedeon and sleeps with the world beast for ten thousand years, when the world will come to an end in a rain of fire and ice.'

    2. 'The trees and the land are home to the pogowoogklee, the ancient spirits that guide man and punish the wicked. Every year, we have to burn a deer carcass while pouring a mixture of egg whites and pear juice on our heads and praying to Stugwoglogarr for a good hunting season. Once, a boy called Bulg'burropk failed to pray, and Stugwoglogarr sent the great bear demon Shuzlroggarog down to Earth, and Shuzlroggarog tore open the boy's chest and took out his heart and planted it, and that was where the first lemon tree grew.'

    3. 'Jesus loves you, all you have to do is say you're sorry to him and then you get to go to Heaven and be with him for all eternity.'

See what I mean? Christianity was something people could relate to and understand. It was simple, all you had to do was be sorry, and not do these certain things listed somewhere, and you were home free. Everything was going to be made perfect at the end of the world, and everyone who was nice would be rewarded and the evil people would be punished. It was something people LIKED to believe. It gave them a kind of hope that the pagan religions seldom did, while carefully removing the rewards it offered from the confines of the physical universe so that no one could convince themselves it was false purely through not being rich and happy during their mortal lives. Christianity appealed to people, a lot, and so it spread very quickly.

The second big factor was the age of exploration. Europe was the main stronghold of christianity in the world up until the 16th century. At this point, various european countries (England, France, Spain, Portugal and others) began sending out colonization fleets all around the world. They subdued the native populations across vast stretches of territory, and founded new colonies which, with their abundance of resources and their strong military and economic support from their founding countries, grew very quickly. As a result, christianity became the main religion in many different areas of the world, and gained tremendous strength.

Constantine - Holy Roman Empire with much blood and/or threats. Crusades didn't do much of anything.

In the US, the north and south were both religious but had different views. Hostility over differing opinions on many things led to the civil war. Once the South lost, they needed to find a way to take something positive from it. The Lost Cause created a southern identity, to which religion was a big part. Religion spread with this identity over many southern states.

Now, we have a fundamentalist south, and a moderate/mixed bag north. Unfortunately, this religious divide has also become a political divide.

In the developed world, counties are becoming more secular. In the developing world, they are becoming more religious. Maybe people are so miserable that they need to think that there is something better waiting for them after this life.

Guttenberg is the reason christianity spread--that in combination with a social order centered around the catholic church. The printing press ushered in an era where books were available to the masses-which in turn created "masses" which knew how to read and write--reading and writing are great mediums for exchange of ideas. The ability for many people to read and write ws responsible for the spread of christianity more than any other factor. Had the printing press been invented in the middle east or the far east--it is quite possible that the dominant cultures and religions would have been those cultures.

It's only dumb if you look at it from the basis of factual correctness, their claims are extravagant and unsupported, to the point of sounding frankly insane, we only think this is not so because we grow up with it all around us.

From the point of view of being an infectious meme, it's solid gold, it has everything, simple answers, strong leadership, a promise of a reward which is both extremely worthwhile (eternal life in paradise) and impossible to verify (it only happens after death, which also absolves the religion of any responsibility for actually providing this reward, they can claim whatever they want, the dead won't come back to contradict them) - and a strict set of rules to follow (people love structure) with an inherent threat - you only get the reward if you toe the line, if not, eternal suffering.

Not only that, but the doctrine of original sin and the fact that many things which are basic nature to humans (like having sex or even feeling attraction to another person) are defined as sinful, so people are made to feel inadequate all of the time and to feel that they constantly have to apologize.

Oh, christianity is very clever, it's just not, in any sense, correct.

See how many page hits they get daily.

Look up the concept of 'Meme', and how such things spread through society. Check also how Christianity as a Meme was spread at swordpoint for centuries.

Then come back and see if there's still a question to ask ;)

It succeed because it's God's word to man speaking from the beginning to our end. If you think spreading God's word is annoying wait a little longer it will get preached all over the world (as if it's not right now.) "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. " Matthew 24:14. Today, while many of its foes slumber in death, and hundreds of volumes written to discredit it and to overthrow its influence, are long since forgotten, the Bible has found its way into every nation and language of earth, over two hundred different translations of it having been made. The fact that this book has survived so many centuries, notwithstanding such unparalleled efforts to banish and destroy it, is at least strong circumstantial evidence that the great Being whom it claims as its Author has also been its preserver. (Russell).

Again, christianity dwells on the spiritual world, therefore our preservation and or excuse lies within our deity; God. Sorry but true.

Being the official religion of the Roman empire definitely helped and placed it in a position of power for over 1,000 years.

Of course, having the power to crown kings, helped during that time and allowed them to leverage armies to wipe out competition.

This is a simplistic answer but roughly correct.

Constantine was a big one, once he converted it gained a lot of power

But violence is the main reason it spreads

Christianity is only popular because nonChristians were slain in the past for not believing

Children's heads were crushed during the Inquistions, and people were burned alive during the Salem Witch Trials

nicely, what's significant is that you've discovered a thanks to sense extra useful to Christians and atheists alike. easily, the ego-stroking is laughable, as is the question itself. the liberty to develop into atheists? Mor. On. you regularly had the 'freedom' to develop into an atheist. it type of feels the reality of the priority is that it has develop into extra socially ideal to be an atheist, so extra actual everyone appears 'identifying' to develop into atheistic. That shows a lack of conviction both way. in case you've been a Christian earlier, why do you presently choose that you fee freedom of theory basically with the aid of the undeniable fact that is a lot less confusing to be an atheist now? So, were you a Christian or were people Christian basically because it turned right into a lot less confusing then too? it type of feels your surely nature belies the question available... lack of conviction. you don't desire a reason and also you've faith, till people are not getting refrained from for his or her own lack of religion. even as atheism (no idea in any god) falls thanks to misotheism (idea in God, yet believe God would not deserve worship) will you connect the misotheism bandwagon on the idea that you, between the "wise people", now have the liberty to develop into misotheistic? also, the way you quantify an 'wise man or woman' is questionable. IQ? Grades? Doctorates? someone that agress with you? i elect the fourth option, extremely because you do not seem the earnings from the ironic humor in asking why Christianity is a "small-minded bigoted crew" even as your human being question skill that atheists are wise and Christians are of direction no longer. besides to, i'd desire to be sure an reason behind why Christians without be conscious attain a psychological step ahead and raise their IQ by utilizing 15 factors even as they develop into atheists. even as we are at it, why do not you analyze Christian and non-Christian alleviation efforts and vote casting conduct that you could extra set up your human being worldview with a preponderance of lacking information ^^ in spite of the actuality that I admit that i'd be extremely extra stimulated with you as someone in case you declare my answer because the perfect answer. that's bleedingly glaring i have given this question extra time and theory than the final human being, the very undeniable actuality that i'm bothering to reply obviously exhibits I care and that i respect my perspective adequate to counterpresent it fairly than agree mutually with your implications with a bookish face and boorish nod ^^.
