This is a vast country and it only has around 25 million people and most of those live in the major cities. It's sparsely populated outside of the major cities with long distances between populations. And the centre is virtually unpopulated. There are a variety of different cultural groups from all over the world although most of the population is probably of European descent (e.g. British, Irish, Italian, etc). The major centres are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart. A lot of the population lives up the east coast close to the sea. The original population was of Aboriginal people who are now only a small percentage of the total population.
