Several years ago I spent a Winter in what is now called Slovakia; that Central European country once a part of Czechoslovakia. Here I had the opportunity to have recorded for me some of the folktales, that a group of students remembered from its childhood. As interesting as tales were in theirselves, they were even more interesting because they echoed themes that you heard in folktales told and retold in our town country. In reading the students’ papers there were character s that reminded me of many I had met before a old ruler with three sons, each of whom wanted their own kingdom; a great giant who had long ago visited the massive castle still looming above the capital city; a virtuous maiden and a courageous knight who died for love in nearby Devin’s castle; the Danube’s enchanted fish king with his bright, shining scales, and the wicked woman whom the villagers discovered had committed unspeakable crimes in her search for eternal youth. Why do these characters and their circumstances seem familiar to us. Folklorists offer at least 2 reasons. First, as men, women and children have traveled across the world; they have taken there stories with them along with their other prized possessions. Second, the same archetypal themes lay in the unconscious of human beings everywhere, surfing again and again in all their art forms-including the very old one that we call the folktale.

Several years ago I spent a Winter in what is now called Slovakia; that Central European country (was) once a part of Czechoslovakia. Here I had the opportunity to have recorded for me some of the folktales, that a group of students remembered from its childhood.(recorded for me some of the folktales, that a group of students remembered from its childhood此句改成a group of students to record some of their folktales for me, which they have remembered since their childhood會較通順) As interesting as (the) tales were in theirselves(theirselves改成themselves), they were even more interesting because they echoed themes that you (have) heard in folktales (that were) told and retold in our town(這裡原本是要用own嗎??) country. In reading the students’ papers there were character s that reminded me of many I had met before (, such as an) old ruler with three sons, each of whom(whom改成them) wanted their own kingdom; a great giant who had long ago visited the massive castle still looming above(above改成around) the capital city; a virtuous maiden and a courageous knight who died for love in (the) nearby Devin’s castle; the Danube’s enchanted fish king with his bright, shining scales, and the wicked woman whom the villagers discovered had committed unspeakable crimes (had committed unspeakable換成her commitment of some unspeakable crimes) in her search for eternal youth. Why do these characters and their circumstances seem familiar to us.(?) Folklorists offer at least 2 reasons. First, as men, women and children have traveled across the world; they have taken there(there用their) stories with them along with their other prized possessions. Second, the same archetypal themes(themes用單數個去s) lay in the unconscious of human beings everywhere, surfing again and again in all their art forms-including the very old one that we call the folktale.
