Alright, with the exception of the first person who answered this, everyone is right, but wrong. However George Walker Bush is NOT the second, because his father is George Herbert Walker Bush. It's a small difference, but one nonetheless.

Martin Van Buren's parents were Dutch immigrants. Because of this, he grew up speaking Dutch, however he was born in Kinderhook, New York on December 5, 1782.

He was the first president born an American citizen. All others up to that point were born while we were still British Colonies.

THAT is why he grew up speaking Dutch, not because he wasn't native-born, because his parents were immigrants. You people should read more history, seriously!

WHAATTT??? No way, no how! You have to be born in America to be president and I don't even know of a president whose PARENT"S had English as a second language. King George II of England only spoke German not English and he took a lot of heat for THAT. But he didn't have to debate in the election process. He was BORN to be king. As long as most Americans speak English I think that any candidate for the presidency had better try real hard to be fluent in the language to keep from being squashed in televised debates. It's hard enough to state your political case.

Real answer: Martin Van Buren ( 1837 - 1841). He was also the first who was not of British origin. He was of Dutch origin.
