    Of the few I've read:

'A Prayer for Owen Meany' is amazing; I cannot recommend it highly enough. (John Irving's 'The World According to Garp' is also very good.)

'The Catcher in the Rye' can be life-changing, but you need to read it when you're young! Once you hit your mid-twenties or so, it's starts to lose its magic. :-(

I was very disappointed by 'Cold Mountain'--I've tried three times, and I can't get more than halfway through the book before giving up from frustration and boredom (and I rarely give up on books!). The language is beautiful but the story is slooooow.

The Tony Hillermans will go quick and be very interesting. The Mitford books were great but they would be more of a senior read I think. I loved Band of Brothers but it is about war and can be very sad. I LOVE Dee Henderson and the Negotiator is one of a series of The O'Malleys which I read pretty much every year. You are lucky to have such a great selection to choose from, I don't think you can go wrong, any of the titles will be enriching!!

WOW, I am very well read, and I have only read two of the books you have mentioned here. Therefore, I can only recommend Skinwalkers and Dance Hall of the Dead. Hillerman crafts excellent stories, and Skinwalkers is one of the best.
