    yes,

    it uses the total weight of the boat,

    the boat will displace the amount of water that the boat weighs.

    so if it is a 100 pound boat, it will be in the water up to the point where it has moved 100 pounds of water out of the way.

    if it is a totally square boat, the math will be easy,

    if it is a real boat, there are lots of curved surfaces that will make it hard to figure out how much volume it will take up in the water for a specific water line.
