What happens is you destroy your muscles. They get weaker and then your body reacts to it. Your body has to heal your muscles and they good a little bigger and stronger when they get healed

People write dissertations on that question lol. An unbelievably simple answer would be that muscle growth is caused by hormones like testosterone, insulin, hgh, IGF1, etc... binding to androgenic receptors on the skeletal muscle and activating them. This then begins the process of protein synthesis with the recruitment of satellite cells which will ultimately result in hypertrophy. That answer is missing so many details however that you might as well worship the muscle god.

Other people have said it, but....
by putting stress on the muscles (lifting weights), eventually, the muscles rip and tear. To fix this, the muscle cells repair themselves a little bigger, and a little stronger, obviously causing the muscles to grow bigger. The aches come from the muscles ripping, and then the cells reparing.

when you work them out your ripping your muscles, so all those days when they are sore dats because there still ripped and are repairing themselves.
