it was based from a science-fiction novel.
there was this scientist who programmed into the computer asking the question, "What is the answer in this universe" and the computer came up with the answer "42"
"The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything has a numeric solution in Douglas Adams' series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In the story, a "simple answer" to The Ultimate Question is requested from the computer Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown, suggesting on an allegorical level that it is more important to ask the right questions than to seek definite answers.
When asked to produce The Ultimate Question, the computer says that it can't, but it can help design an even more powerful computer (the Earth) that can. The programmers then embark on a further, ultimately futile, ten-million-year program to discover The Ultimate Question, a process that is hindered after eight million years by the unexpected arrival on Earth of the Golgafrinchans and then ruined completely, five minutes before completion, when the Earth is destroyed by the Vogons."
so, it's just some stupid thing to say if someone doesn't know the answer to something about the universe that we can't possibly know at this state of time.
So, got a question? No one around to solve it? Go for "42"

The creator of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams, said he whimsically picked 42 to be the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. There was no reason or rhyme--he just wanted to chose a number as inconspicuous and believable as any, and the number he came up with was 42! What does it mean? Lol it means whatever you want it to mean.
Interestingly, a scientest discovered that if you were to bore a hole straight down into the earth to travel to the other side, it would take exactly 42 minutes--the "fastest way" to travel around the world. Eerily coincidental!
Look up Hitchhikers Guide to the Galexy on wikipedia. You'll be amused and quite intrigued ;)

It has to do with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Its a sci-fi book about a computer that says after millions of years that the answer to the ultimate question is 42. You can research the book and read about it. The author states that he randomly chose 42, for no special reason, yet people are finding special meanings in the number. Good luck.
