I accidentally washed a pair of dark blue jeans with my whites. Everything had a blue tint to it. Unfortunately, my husband (trying to be a good husband) put my clothes in the dryer! I thought that they were ruined for life, but I decided to use my kids' laundry detergent. I use Dreft liquid detergent (it's for babies) on my girls' clothes and I actually have parents at the park ask me how I keep their whites so white, etc. So I used the Dreft and everything was brilliant white again! I followed the directions for heavily soiled loads and they were perfect--you couldn't even tell that they were once blue. Also, one of my husband's nice dress shirts got pink dye on it from one of my girls' clothes and it got dried and then it sat for months. We thought there was no hope. I washed it with Dreft and it is just like new. The pink stain is gone! It costs about twice as much as regular detergent (depending on which brand you normally use), but it is well worth it. I use it on all of my clothes now! I never worry about stains on anything because Dreft can handle it! Good luck!
I have used bleach on whites other than socks and towels and it has left a yellow tint on my clothes. Also, some fabrics are too delicate to be bleached--follow the directions on the care tag. If you wash a fabric with bleach that is not supposed to be in bleach, it may get holes burned in it. Just keep that in mind!!!! :)
