All the yogurt, sour cream and liquified coconut suggestions will help.
I would just add that you may try adding a cup full of oil and mixing it well into your warm stew, then drain off all the liquid you can. (Keeping the oil for cooking spicy food). You then add a tin or two of coconut milk to your red african stew. It may now need a new name, but should be a lot "cooler"!
Same goes for adding potatoes, plantains, chopped cucumbers or any other ingredients which will help to absorb the "heat"... You will still have the spicyness to contend with, but it may not be as bad a you think... Just serve with lots of rice, couscous or other really absorbent staple.
