"Proper" way to pronounce in spanish?

I've always been taught by my spanish teacher that the proper way to pronounce z's (and c's when they produce a soft sound) is not how you pronounce s's, but rather more like somewhere in between an s and a "th". How *should* I pronounce these letters?
Update: I know that there are many dialects of spanish and therefore tons of different ways to pronounce things. I guess what I was asking is what the Real Acedemia Española reccomends.
