The US has decided that it is strong enough to make those decisions on its own. It decides what countries should or should not have nuclear weapons. Israel does, but no other country in the region should.

There is a Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), however, the US has not lived up to its part of the bargain, and wants to extinguish this agreement. The US wants to maintain strategic economic control, and it can do this through its dominant military strength.

We have the bombs to destroy the earth many times over. Sadly, we are in a very dangerous and precarious situation because of the US position on the NPT.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the international group that monitors nuclear proliferation among other things. They are the folks who, you may remember, said Iraq had no nuclear weapons when Bush & Co were marching around claiming otherwise. (With no credible evidence)
