Any more, all stores / businesses are looking for references. Even Janitorial / cleaning companies want to make sure they're not hiring a serial killer or rapist. Sorry, it's a mean fact. Perhaps you could look into the military.Source(s): Dad of 7

Most all big firms do reference checks... in that:
1) they do not want to have to pay for advertisements to hire replacement workers if that employee has been found to be unreliable, a thief etc...
2) they do not want to have pay out monies to persons whom may try to involve them in a lawsuit or take them for money in another way
3) they do not want to hire spies for competitors and therefore lose monies financially
Most jobs that I have encountered whom tend not get references checks or care about negative ones, are those whom are DESPERATE due to the fact that nobody wants to work there, or is too far out for people to get to, or small businesses or family owned shops where they do not have the money/resources or time to check out EVERYTHING they should check on.
However, despite the aforementioned... with social security and the immigration issues more and more employers are more inclined to NOT risk being fined for not checking the status and background of future employees
