targeted traffic and internet sales?

if you sell goods and services from a webite, i wastold that a 1%conversion rate is acceptable, meaning that i should make one sale out of every 100 targeted visitors.yet when i contacted a serive that provides targetted traffic, they told me that that figure is to high. i was told by yet another source that u should only expect one sale from every 1000 targeted visitors. what is the realistic conversion rate to expect?

It really depends on how 'targeted' your traffic is. If you use very targeted matching in your search marketing campaigns I don't it unreasonable to expect up 3-5% conversion rate.

That said it really does depend on what you are selling. Training shoes for example would have much lower target conversion rate than a more expensive item like an LCD tv...

1 in 1000 is very low, if they are telling you that, don't use them.

Typical rates for click thru's on banner advertising is between 0.5 and 1.5% untargetted.

You should be expecting between 1.5% and 3.5% for targetted traffic.

However this is not a sales conversion rate - that depends on your product and pricing strategies when the visitor gets to your site.

The feedback you have received could be....

1 sale for every 100 real visitors to your site

1 sale for every 1000 impressions of your ads

Find out what they meant with the feedback you got.

However, I think you should also check the resource I use to help my sales.

There are many factors, if you drive many visitors but your website is not appealing to the public than you might never get a conversion. Also you have to make sure that your target audience is making it to your site. If you the wrong audience views your website than you might also never get a sale.
