Again, the effect is to make the wall seem like a screen. ‘Layered’ was the word that Venturi usedto describe this treatment of surfaces and spaces, thus coining one of the architectural clich’es of century.
Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture was enormously influential and became the foundation of the architectural movement known as Postomodernism. The Vanna Venturi House can reasonably claim to be the first Postmodern building. The critic Frederick Schwartz goes so far as to call it the first Postmodern anything.
