First off I wanna say Welcome to Savannah! I hope I will be able to answer some of your questions!
Savannah is a very large city... But when talking about visiting you hear mostly of the Downtown/Historic district. Here is where you will find river-street, City Market, SCAD, and most if not all the daily tours.
The hotels around this part of Savannah vary depending on the time of year just like anywhere else. The closer you stay towards River-street the more money you will be forking out... But its worth it! You will be within walking distance to almost everything you will be looking for!
A few of my favorite hotels are:
The Hyatt - this hotel is actually located on river streets and has some wonderful views. You will pay for it though!
The Inn at Ellis Square - very nice hotel. Located on one of the main streets of downtown called bay street.
Four Points by Sheraton Historic Savannah - One of the newer hotels... A lot of people don't know about it yet, which means spots are normally available and prices aren't that bad (yet)
There are quit a few more, but those are just some of my favorites.
In Mid July you need to remember, that the Savannah Minor league baseball team isn't called the Savannah Sand Gnats for nothing! They can and will eat you alive! Its very hot and can be very nasty! So bring clothes that will be comfy!
Savannah is also known for being a walking city, so don't forget the shoes!
Tours and attractions-
There are so many... Some of my favorites are: The Dolphin Tour, where you go out on a boat and go find dolphins plus you get to see the "waving girl". Hearse Ghost Ride Tours, you actually sit in a hearse while you are taken around downtown and given different stories of the past. I would go at night! And The Haunted Pub Crawl. There are also quit a few Trolly tours that would be great to take during the day.
Restaurants- Wow! There are a ton! Like many tourist I'm sure you already want to go to lady and sons. Just be careful... Lines get long very early! For dinner be prepared to get there at least 2 hours before you want to eat. As I've seen lines form at 2:30 in the afternoon just for a 5:00pm dinner! Lines get so long that in the summer they have misters going outside along with a tub of water to be given to you as you wait! Another place you might want to try is "Uncle Bubba's" that is Paula Deans Brother. he has a restaurant on the way to tybee island... He serves some of her favorite dishes plus u can say you have been in the same place, Paula tapes her shows called "Paula's parties".
You can't go wrong finding a place to eat! You will find anything from Classic Bar food, to Sushi, to some awesome Italian! I promise you won't go hungry! *The pirates house has a good story behind it has well*
A funny little side note: Savannah is famous for the “To-Go Cup” Thats right!!! Around the historic distric it is ok to walk around with your favorite drink as long as it is in a plastic cup and you are 21.
I hope that helps a little bit! If not here is a very helpful link!!! Have fun and remember to be safe!
