5.

Barnard transplanted the heart of a young woman, Denise Darvall, the victim of a road

accident, to the body of Louis Washkansky, a dentist in his fifties, who was suffering from

incurable heart disease. Although the operation was successful, Washkansky survived for only 18 days before dying of pneumonia, a result of the suppression of his immune system.

6.

Heart transplant surgery was in its infancy then, and there were many things to be

overcome before the operation achieved today's success rate. The most difficult of

these was the possibility of rejection of

the transplanted organ by the body of the recipient.

7.

Barnard went from strength to strength as a transplant surgeon until his hands became

badly affected by rheumatoid arthritis in the late 1970s. In 1983 the condition forced him to retire from active surgery. He went to live in Vienna in 2000.

8.

One of the icons of his generation, Barnard was a well-known socialite. Very

attractive to the opposite sex, he was frequently photographed in the company of beautiful women. He married and divorced three times and had six children, of whom five survive

him.
