The city’s most significant cultural attraction is the Peiyu Tien (Peiyu Temple;open daily)-literally the “North Hell Temple,” close to the center of town on Minchuan Road. The temple was built in 1697 to house an image of the God of Hell, which originates from the late-Ming dynasty in China. The current temple is, for the most part, a restoration completed in the late 1970s, but the seven-story main tower still contains the original image. The traditional Chinese vision of hell is not so different from the sinning Christian’s - a place of imaginative and ever-lasting tortures-with the difference that the Chinese God of Hell can be bought off ahead of time with incense, spirit money and even Pringles.
