What's the difference between a station wagon and a 5-door hatchback?

For example, the Toyota Matrix and Subaru WRX are classified as wagons and hatchbacks, respectively. They seem to have similar proportions though. What's the diff? Thanks!

    Station wagons are longer.

    Hatchbacks are not as long.

Station wagons have longer ger trunks that are at least 2 feet longer than a hatchback trunk. and the wheel base for a stationwagon is also longer.

You can tell just by looking at a car that it is a hatchback or stationwagon.

My 06 WRX is considered a wagon and the 08's are called 5 door hatch. Dementionally they are not really different.

Station wagons are typically longer. Otherwise, nothing but the name. SUVs are just glorified, lifted station wagons.
