What is "the Sudan"?

I am learning about Western Africa, and Sudan is not included in that area. I am to label a map, and one of the features I must label is "the Sudan". Does anyone have a clue of what that means?

Thank you, and I need some help!!

Sudan (officially the Republic of Sudan) (Arabic: السودان ‎as-Sūdān)[2] is the largest country in Africa[3] and tenth largest country in the world by area. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, Kenya and Uganda to the southeast, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. The country's name derives from the Arabic Bilad-al-sudan, literally "land of the blackened."[2]

The Sudan is an Islamic Republic in Northeast Africa, under Egypt. If You're Learning About West Africa then Maybe You Are Talking About a Different Country.

    Regardless, Here's a Map. :)
