One can get confused at times between addiction and commitment. An addiction is something that is done for the way it makes you feel, and later for how one feels when not having the drug. If one is addicted to doing good in this world, and feels bad about it when one can not do good, I would call this a positive addiction. So all depends on what comes from what one is strongly committed to. It is good to not be dependent on chemicals or other things to maintain some artificial type mood. It is best to have one's mood sensitive to others and conditions in the outside world. Trying to escape from the outside world or avoid feeling what others feel is not good. Not all religions are the same when it comes to doing good in the world, and being sensitive to others and conditions in the outside world. One should not turn on all religion, because you have seen a bad side of some religions or religious people. One needs to be open to a degree to the value of what others believe in in this world. The truth is not simple and requires listening and gaining something of value from people of all sorts of beliefs and experiences. One does not want to ignor things that are not easy to understand, or easy to prove. Subtle cues often are all you have in life when forced to make a hard decision. A lot of knowledge that can help guide one in life, will work in a way to fine tune one's intuition to be open to the subtle or sensitive side of life. A hole in one's heart could mean an open heart.
