Lava I read that article at work last week and almost fell out my chair. I also read posts by some of the Marines, and I can agree a little bit that Devil Dog was usually a precursor to a chewing. But i also heard the same goes in the Navy for shipmate, these new kids take offence to that. I use to call my fellow Docs shipmate and my Marines Devil Dog. I took pride when I was called Devil Doc. Heck we even made up a tshirt that says Devil Squids on it. From what i hear and see with this new breed is they get offended alot. I know i aint an old salt like you Lava but i came in when we lived in open squad bay and when we finally got barracks there was like 1 tv for the floor that had cable, the only phone was the duty phone now these kids have cable, phone, internet all this junk and they get offended by Devil Dog. And you cant tell them to suck it up or shut your pie hole cause you get in trouble for offending them. I read one post that some junior guy complained about not being able to call his higher ups ie Gunny Devil Dog and its not fair and im like No Sh... he is a friggin Gunny. I know with my unit I call Marines Devil Dog and nobody has got offended by it. Maybe it cause its reserves maybe its cause we are the High speed guys and it takes more than dumb stuff to get to us.
So to answer your question coming from the Doc. Devil Dog is the hard charging ,take no mess, takin care of business, layin it out there for his Brother, drinkin, fightin, tattoed up, will be cold, wet, hungry, tired, complaing cause he is ready to rock and roll and dont have time for some remf tellin him to hold fast. Or thats my opinion
Semper Fi ya Devil Dogs
