is solar energy a sustainable ?

    Not in the sense that it is being used now.

    Centralized solar plants are far too inefficient to be a major power source for the smallest of populations (forget about using it for a major metropolitan area). Besides there are only certain climates would be suitible for solar plants.

    A useful (but not solvent) way of utilizing solar panels is to build them into buildings, to assist (about 5%) with that building's electricity usage. Build a solar panel into each and every building in a city can help reduce (again, about 5%) a city's reliance on centralized power plants.
