Los Gatos to Contra Costa is a pretty long journey on public transit, but here are two sites that might help:

    http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.aspx

    http://www.google.com/transit

511.org is a general site about travel in the Bay Area -- traffic information, public transit, etc.

I think Google Transit is a new service that uses Google Maps, and it covers the Bay Area.

BART is great, and you can ride from the peninsula (Millbrae) or East Bay (Fremont). The problem is that public transportation on the two ends isn't always convenient.

For the near East Bay from Richmond to Fremont, bus service is provided by AC Transit:

    http://www2.actransit.org/main.wu

AC Transit serves the western part of Contra Costa County -- the communities of Kensington, El Cerrito, Richmond, and El Sobrante.

The rest of Contra Costa County is served by The County Connection:

    http://www.cccta.org/wb/

I'm not familiar with bus service in Los Gatos and the South Bay, but the above links should provide you with this information.
