The hypocholesterolemic and hypotriglyceridemic effects of inulin and synthetic OFS were shown similar in the current study. In consistent with the hypocholesterolemic effect of inulin (6% in diet) in normocholesterolemic rats, inulin(5% in diet) significantly decreased the plasma cholesterol level in Balb/c mice in the current study. The synthetic OFS also reduced plasma cholesterol concentration in agreement with previous study, this study also demonstrated the hypocholesterolemic effects of fructans-type oligosaccharides were associated with increases in the fecal neutral steroids. We further demonstrated inulin and OFS similarly raised the fecal bile acid excretion(Table3 ), which is thought to be involved in the hypocholesterolemic effect of nondigestible carbohydrates. The increased neutral steroid and bile acid excretion in animals receiving inulin and OFS in this study may reduce the cholesterol pool, which in turn decreased the plasma cholesterol levels. It is unclear why inulin induced greater interference for cholesterol absorption than did OFS in the small intestine.
