The U.S. government and the citizens have unequal access to information. This asymmetry of information (the government has the most information, the people little to none) means that the government can manufacture consent by aligning the information it releases to the public with motives the public will approve.

President Bush's war in Iraq is a classic example. The Bush administration played up bogus WMD intelligence because they knew that would frighten the Congress into approving a war with Iraq. If the truth were known about the non-existing WMD and the ultimate costs of the war, the American public would resist the war with all they had. The Bush administration lied and manufactured the consent it needed from Congress to unilaterally invade Iraq. The conservative media played the role of the enforcer after Congress approved the war by bullying and insulting all those who knew the administration was lying and the Congress was duped (it was a Republican Congress).

Even the New York Times was an unwitting part of the plot. The administration used NYT reporter Judith Miller to leak bogus intel to scare the nation and make the threat appear legitimate. Only later did we discover the administration was pointing to its OWN bogus leaks in the NYT and other media outlets as proof of WMD.

It's the most despicable national crime in U.S. history.

Limit the range of opinions offered in the media, present differences on details of policies as the real debate instead of allowing real opponents of the policy to be included in the conversation.

The trick is giving the impression the views they represent are very different and do cover the whole spectrum and anyone who goes beyond that is simply radical or our of touch with reality while in reality limiting the debates to those in favor or against but who differ on strategical choices and or practical details. It's about giving the false perception everything is debated openly while never questioning the fundamental consensus of the elite

    Of course you don't.

It's easier to send kids to foster homes if an obama super delegate calls in a morals charge. If it's a fraud then it's manufactured. Want the scaled up version add newspapers and reporters to the mix, and polls for feed back.

He's a pretty self-indulgent self-loather who made a name for himself writing drivel, so who really cares what he meant?
