Although there are some who say sushi originated in China, there are also claims it has its origins even earlier from South East Asia. But the modern form of sushi certainly is attributed to Japanese cuisine, there is no equivalent Chinese dish.

It's Japanese although it originally came from China. It wasn't PASTA that the Italians learned from the Chinese, it was NOODLES. The type of noodle in Italy is Italian. It's the same with sushi. It's all Japanese now.

  • As of today, sushi is considered a Japanese dish. But it first originated from southeast Asia. The idea soon spread to China, and they were the ones who introduced it to Japan.

The original type of sushi, known today as narezushi ( fermented sushi), was first developed in Southeast Asia and spread to south China before being introduced to Japan sometime around the 8th century. Fish was salted and wrapped in fermented rice, a traditional lacto-fermented rice dish.
