Abstract

A switching power converter has prominent features

of small size, light weight, and high efficiency. On

the other hand, it has inherently a defect of surge

generation due to switching process, and especially,

the common-mode noise related to the ground plane

is difficult to suppress. Concerning this electromagnetic

interference (EMI), a lot of discussions

have been recently reported. This paper presents a

measurement system, propagation mechanism, and

suppression techniques of the common-mode noise in

the high-frequency switching power converters.

Introduction

Switching power converters have been widely used as

power supply for a lot of electrical and electronic

equipments for a long time. It is because they have

prominent features of small size, light weight, and

high efficiency. However, they have inherently a

defect of surge generation due to switching process.

It is well known that the switching surge is generated

due to steep current change and parasitic inductances.

This surge results in the output noise, and the com-

mon-mode noise in the input terminals, and the radiation

noise. Recently this switching noise has been

discussed as one of the EM1 (Electromagnetic interference)

topics related to electrical environmental

pollution, and the noise emission is limited by the

international regulation of CISPR Publication 22.

However, there are a lot of situations concerning the

noise generation and suppression, and then the noise

discussions on equipment each are required.

This paper presents a measurement system, propagation

mechanism, and suppression techniques of the

common-mode noise in the high-frequency switching

power converters.
