What is cloth mache?

I want to make a princess leia costume and i heard that cloth mache is the best way to do it. what is it and how does that work?

Same as paper mache only you use strips of cloth instead of paper. You can use strips of old white cotton sheets (thrift stores are great) and 50/50 white glue and water. 1) Create your form from balloons, chicken wire, clothes hangers, whatever you need to get the shape you want. 2) Cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil so your cloth strips won't stick. 3) Tear your sheets in narrow strips (3-4" wide) and different lengths. 4) Put strips in glue/water mixture, then pull through your fingers to get most of it off. 5) Lay the strips over your form. You will need about 4 layers to get a good thickness. Make sure to overlap the different layers. 6) It will need to dry about a week, depending on the warmth and humidity in your home. 7) When dry lightly sand if your want and paint.

There are various manufacturers of resin and resin products. What I would suggest is that you prepare a small part with paper mache, maybe cover a toilet paper roll. Then buy the smallest container of resin and fiberglass and run a test on the part. If it sets up the way you would like then proceed onward and do the Iron Man costume. Why take a chance in wrecking something that you put a lot of time and effort into creating. Run a test first.

I am just seeing this for the first time. I was the one who invented the process of "cloth mache". The term was coined in my first book, "The Simple Screamer: A Guide to the Art of Paper and Cloth Mache" (1984, Gibbs Smith Publisher). It is cloth, usually an old bed sheet torn into strips, dipped in white glue, like Elmer's. I use it as a "skin" for my paper mache sculptures. You can find more information on site, or my blog.

after making some ester eggs for the grandchildren I was thinking about making papier mache easter baskets, when suddenly I thought why not use cotton strips of material instead of paper that would be mush prettier.

fiberglass is a resin with a harder that you mix together .it will not eat your armour use gloves when working with it you can get fiberglass at walmart or loews or auto parts store
