    Grand Theft Auto 1 was set in Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. It set the general format for GTA games - open based gameplay, rising through the ranks, etc. It was released on PlayStation 1 and PC.

    Grand Theft Auto: London was the expansion to this game. It was set in London, and is one of the only 2 games not set in one of the three cities. It was availabe on PC and PlayStation 1.

    Grand Theft Auto 2: Set in the near future, it has a different gameplay that allows criminals to appeal to different organisations it is availabe on PS1 and PC.

    Grand Theft Auto 3: This is set in Liberty City and is the first one in 3D that doesn't have the top-down viewpoint. It was the most popular GTA game at the time, and bought much success to the series. It is based on Scarface, Goodfellas and The Godfather.

    Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This is set in 1986 Vice City and is availabe for PS2 and PC, it is based on Scarface and Miami Vice.

    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This is set in the early 90s in San Andreas and focuses on California gang life. It is based on Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, Colors, Easy Rider, and Casino.

    Grand Theft Auto: Advance. This is a game set a year before GTA 3 and is only availabe for the Game Boy Advanced.

    Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. This is available for PSP and PS2 and is a prequel to Grand Theft Auto 3.

    Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. This is a prequel to Grand Theft Auto Vice city and is availabe for PSP and PS2.

    Grand Theft Auto IV: This takes place in a Liberty City that looks a lot like New York and will be released on April 29th.
