I ride a sportster 1200, my father in law rides a honda 1100...
my bike is quicker, lighter, nimbler, and even though mine is 3 years older than his, mine is more valuable if we were to both sell our bikes today. I've swapped bikes with him, it's not that I'm prejudiced against his... mine just better, only thing I like more about his is his bigger fuel tank.
I had a flat tire on mine this weekend, his was worn out, so we both had to change tires, mine took an hour, his took 2&1/2 hours because of the old drum brake and shaft drive. So those who claim Harley's are high maintenance or more expensive are full of it.
Go for the sportser and don't pay any attention to the nay sayers here.... there seems to be lots of jealousy or something and they don't answer accurately or just don't know any better
and looking at someone else's answer, the hp & torque ratings quoted show that he doesn't know what he's looking at or how to read them, peaks are one thing, but the harley has torque like a mack truck right off idle, the honda needs lots of revs to get to its peak. Ford and Chev do the same thing, Ford looks lower on paper but has a broader curve, not like a Chev where it's a sharp spike.
Go ride both and you'll see, if you won't ride a harley because your ego or something won't let you, then it says a lot about you.
As far as a sportster being a girls bike, it's actually a terrible girls bike, a dyna lowrider is a much better girls bike, look for sportster history, there's lots there and it's very rich, unlike any of these imports
