gaudium et Spes?

The Church, over many centuries before the Second Vatican Council, had often described itself as a spiritual reality set apart from the world. However, in the Gaudium et Spes, te Church says that its destiny istruly linked to the destiny of the entire human race. Can both be true?

I don't see why not - you could have a reality attached to this one that would fade when this one fades. Here's a rather wobbly comparison - a tidal pool is separate from the ocean but without the ocean it would cease to be.

in the world, not of the world...

the church has been charged with guiding the human race towards God.
