A straight change is thrown with three fingers gripping the seam and the ball closer to the palm. It breaks down like a splitter.
A circle change is thrown with the thumb and index finger in a circle. It breaks like a screwball.
As for the speed, its probably a matter of how hard its thrown. After all, the purpose of a changeup is to fool a batter that is expecting a fastball. The idea is it is thrown slower than a fastball, causing the batter to swing early.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeup
