I think this sums it up rather nicely...
Doctrine and Covenants 121:39 -
39 We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.
Although Mormon doctrine glorifies women and womanhood, and my own dear husband has learned well from all the General Authorities to treat his wife and children with love and respect, I can't help but notice that there ARE men who pick and choose amongst the doctrines in order to exercise their penchant for domination. There ARE some very miserable women in "Mormondom" because of these manipulative jerks.
Yes, it is easy to abuse women who do not have the financial power (or the physical stamina, due to pregnancy, etc) to tell a jerk where to go...
That said, I think the majority of the leadership is good and sincere, and very loving and supportive of their wives... Actually, looking back, all of my Bishops have been married to rather dominant women, lol!
Yes, I do think pregnancy does make one feel rather powerless (I hate pregnancy.. but the results are worth it, lol). However, I've never been treated as a "second class citizen". Actually, from what I've gleaned from the teachings, and how I've been treated by my faithful husband, I've always felt venerated and treasured for my goddess like qualities.
Most of the "Mormon jerks" I know have been semi-active. The men who humbly learn the teachings and apply them... they are true gems of humanity! Every (good) woman deserves a husband like that!
Lifelong faithful Mormon woman (in Australia).
