According to the Illinois Department of Revenue:
Illinois grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file your individual income tax return. This extension does not grant you an extension of time to pay any tax you owe. If you determine that you will owe tax, you must file Form IL-505-I, Automatic Extension Payment for Individuals to pay any tax you owe in order to avoid penalty and interest on tax not paid by April 15, 2008. If you do not expect to owe tax, you do not have to do anything.

IL state income taxes, for personal returns, are due on April 15 each year (unless April 15 falls on a weekend, in which case it would be due on the next business day).
If you don't file by that date, your state will grant you an automatic 6 month extension. However, you MUST pay an estimated amount of tax if you are going to owe, otherwise you will owe interest and penalties from the ORIGINAL due date.
