8-year-old girl asks for divorce in court
The snip:
ANA’A, April 9 - An eight-year-old girl decided last week to go the Sana’a West Court to prosecute her father, who forced her to marry a 30-year-old man.
Nojoud Muhammed Nasser arrived at court by herself on Wednesday, April 2, looking for a judge to handle her case against her father, Muhammed Nasser, who forced her two months ago to marry Faez Ali Thamer, a man 22 years her senior. The child also asked for a divorce, accusing her husband of sexual and domestic abuse.
According to Yemeni law, Nojoud cannot prosecute, as she is underage. However, court judge Muhammed Al-Qathi heard her complaint and subsequently ordered the arrests of both her father and husband.
“My father beat me and told me that I must marry this man, and if I did not, I would be raped and no law and no sheikh in this country would help me.

No, she shouldn't be granted a divorce. Instead, the marriage should be annulled (it was never valid in the first place), her "husband" imprisoned for child rape, and child abuse, her father either committed to a mental institution or imprisoned for child abuse, and the girl cared for, educated and allowed to have some semblance of a childhood.

These people are uncouth savages. Always have been...always will.
Human rights and the rights of women are virtually non-existant in this place and others that surround it. And yet you have imbicilic females from the U.S. and Europe that marry these men and are shocked to their roots when the first time they want to go out in public they're beaten sensless by their husbands because it's 'custom' for you to hold a position in his and the other male family members lives that is no better than a goat or a piece of furniture. Property...that's all.
Stay on your side of the world. And we should be staying on ours as well.

OH MY GOSH that is absolutely heart breaking. Her father either sold her to this man, because he lost his job, or tried to get her out of the house so there would be one less mouth to feed. Her father got this idea because it is such a common practice over there, and he probably thought that it would go unnoticed. That poor girl, it just makes you so sad to know that this happens in the world.

This is sick--did it happen in America? That poor child is going to need a lot of counseling and I hope her dad and the man who married her rot in prison for a long time.

You have to remember what is not normal in our country may be noramal in another. This is normal in their country, in American someone would be charged with rape and another with endangering a minor. We can't enfringe or beliefs on other cultures especially if we are NOT in their country, even if it maybe wrong.

I don't see how you can get a divorce when it was never actually legal or recognized by our government to begin with. People never cease to amaze me.

That is extremely horrifying. Any real man would not want to touch a child. UNBELIEVABLE and totally disgusting.
