3x - 2y = -1

9y = 4x + 53

    let's have

    x=5 and y=8

    3x-2y=3*5-2*8=15-16=-1

    9y=9*8=54

    4x+53=4*5+53=73

    Thus, this is not a solution for your problem.

    Substitute 5 for x and 8 for y into each equation and see if it "checks" for both:

    3(5) - 2(8) = -1

    15 - 16 = -1

    -1 = -1

    True -> It checks!!

    9(8) = 4(5) + 53

    72 = 20 + 53

    72 = 73

    False -> It DOES NOT check.

    Therefore, (5, 8) is not a solution of the system.

    all you do is plug in for X and Y

    3(5) - 2(8) = -1

    15-16 = -1

    this one is true, now let's see if it works for the 2nd set

    9(8)=4(5) + 53

    72= 20 + 53

    72= 63

    since 72 does not equal 73, this is false

    so the given ordered pair is not a solution to the system
