This poem is about Seamus' father. All throughout his childhood, he watched his father and followed him around and was amazed at his father's talent in farming. Now it is his father who relies on Seamus and is amazed by his talent. It is about the reversal of roles over time.

From what I remember, its mainly about family ties and breaking traditions, so its pretty literal. No real metaphor there.
