It depends on where you live. I live in the Chicago area, and it's nothing to drive 30-45 minutes to get anywhere. My brother's ceremony was in a near west suburb of the city, and his reception was (I swear to God) some where near the Indiana border.
My boss got married at her family church near O'Hare airport, but had her reception near her home in the far west suburbs.
I got married in Minnesota, both ceremony and reception were in St. Paul, and I think it took about 15 minutes to get from one to the other.
If they are far away from each other, I would suggest booking room blocks at a hotel near the reception, preferably one with a shuttle. Then allow enough time for the guests to go from the ceremony back to the hotel, drop off their car and take the shuttle to the reception hall. Or better yet, book the reception at the hotel where the guests are staying.
