It depends on what you're looking for.
Fort Lauderdale has 2 basic areas of the beach: the "strip", which is the more popular, crowded area of the beach. It has tons of restaurants and bars, and is always busy. The other area is just a few miles north, by the Galt Ocean Mile, etc. It's a little bit quieter and calmer, usually with an older crowd.
Hollywood beach is kind of retro. It has a boardwalk type area with a string of little shops, bars and restaurants. It's a little bit more run down than Fort Lauderdale beach, but in my opinion that makes it quaint.
