The Funeral Director walks in and closes the lid. Then when they are ready to go in the ground the casket is put in a Vault which is made of metal.

Of all of the funerals that I have went to, no, they didn't do anything like that, the funeral director just closed the lid, then they lowered it into the vault, and then into the ground.

Source(s): I just read that on newer vaults there is a screw that they tighten before lowering into the ground. This is done after the family leaves. And on newer caskets there is also the same thing.

"The last nail in the coffin" is a well known phrase. They used to nail them shut, but I think they uses screws these days.
