While I don't know a ton about .NET, I am experieced with portals like Joomla, PHP Nuke and Post Nuke.

A regular website is more a one topic, single user controlled system. A portal us more often a collection of information about a similar topic, allowing community interaction and news-like features.

It's been a long time since I have used Nuke, but they were always pretty good systems. Sometimes a little much for what I needed, but an easy setup and good available themes by competent designers were a big help when i was starting out.

The benefit of using PostNuke or PHPNuke is they don't rely on any specific platform, unlike anything .NET. As long as you have PHP and MySQL installed (99.9% of servers do) you are set to go.

    Good Luck
