yes. calcium hydroxide is more desirable than limestone.
it is because calcium hydroxide is soluble in water . it will
react with the acidic soil. but the limestone is insoluble

calcium hydroxide is a weak alkali
it is only slightly soluble in water
CaO is even better than Ca(OH)2 (although it's out of the scope of this question)
CaO reacts with water, dissolves faster than Ca(OH)2
