Okay, I have a perfect example of this. Atheists tell me all the time, "HA! How in the heck can you guys believe in God when you KNOW the earth is older than 6,000 years!" Actually, even some Christians have asked this, doubting what is in the Bible. But they took one phrase -- one little phrase about how God's time is different than our time here on earth, and how (for example) a day can be like a thousand years. So those people took that, then went back to the Book of Genesis, and determined that if God created everything in 6 days, then everything in the universe must only be 6,000 years old.
Most of us just try to gently correct them, because of course we know that they interpreted that completely wrong.
The Bible has a lot of parables, analogies, old-world language and metaphors. Truly to dig in and study the meaning, one often needs the help of a study guide or pastor.
That's my take on it.
