A cylindrical drill with radius 5 is used to bore a hole throught the center of a sphere of radius 6. Find the volume of the ring shaped solid that remains.

    Cool problem.

    Do it as a rotation and use symmetry to calculate the hemisphere.

    Use the equation:

    x^2 + y^2 = 6^2 for the hemisphere for y > 0

    Use

    x=5 for the cylinder.

    Rotate them about the y-axis

    Integrate the difference between the volume of the first and the second from y = 0 to y = sqrt(36/25)

    Lots of algebra, but that should yield you your result.

    BTW can do the same about the x axis.
