Do not take sleeping pills for one. That is the worse thing you could do. I have many ways to get to sleep. I am like an expert on this because I used to have the same problem. I have done many things but a thing I do that works for ME is I get it very cold in the house, I trun my plug in fan on low and point it a bit towards me (make sure it is a quiet one if you get one) and I turn my ceiling fan on low. The softness drowns out everything else in the world. I cuddle up in my sheet (first layer), Light comforter (second layer) and big poofy comforter (on top). It is cold on the outside but under the blankets you are so warm and cozy that you will sleep like a baby.
A little method that a doctor tought me was to take deep, slow breaths and loosen all of the muscles in your body. Start with your head or toes and work up or down.
You know those cool little water fountain type things? You could put one in your room and listen to the water flow as you slowly drift off and go to sleep.
When I was a bit younger I would listen to Enya to help me drift to sleep. Here is one of her songs http://youtube.com/watch?v=jFlrwgYN4f0. Find more of her music at http://youtube.com/ type in enya and tons of music videos will appear. If that does not work maybe you are a nature-sound person get a nice cd of nature sounds such as the forest, ocean or rain.
My mom says she just prays to God untill she falls asleep. Maybe just keep saying the Lords prayer? This is a good method. It does not work for me but everybody is different. We are trying to find the perfect method for you.
The last thing I can think of is this. I like to picture me in an imaginary world and act it out in my head like it is actually happening. One of my fantasies is the worl has changed. Mythical creatures are on earth and everybody is fending for themselves without any technology. I have some creatures as pets and my power is I can call on them and I can manipulate the elements (or I am a ninja).
I hope you got something from this that will help! I spent a nice amount of time working on it for you. Oh! I almost forgot Melatonin is a natural herb. It is something some peoples bodies do not produce enouph of that will help you get to sleep. WARNING: I have tried it and it makes me feel feverish. It also does that to one of my big brothers. It is not a good feeling but it does not hurt you so try it. It is all natural. The fever thing is probobly just a me and brother thing. Here are some things about Melatonin. http://health.yahoo.com/other-other/melatonin/healthwise--d04058a1.html
You can find Melatonin at your local health food store I believe. Good Luck!
EDIT: I just thought of this one. Take a warm bath with scents or bubbles in it to sooth you. Make sure you have enouph pillows, clean sheets, and comfortable blankets. If you hate your bed, I always LOVE memory foam. Put it under your sheet. It is cushy and it molds into your every curve. Do not get a memory foam bed. They suck. They are hard as a rock! Just get some nice memory foam. Make sure the flat, smooth side is up and the lumpy side is down. Lumpy side up is just wrong. Smooth side up is AMAZING.
