Is Steamed rice or fried rice healthy?

I went to a Japanese steakhouse two nights ago, and I got the fried rice instead of the steamed white rice. My mom said the choice I made was good because the japanese steakhouse makes it infront of you, and all the cook does is put white rice and mixed veggies and put it on the grill and put some teryaki sauce on it. So it comes with veggies and rice! So is it the healthier choice to white steamed rice? Would it be fattier? (the place didn't sell brown rice)

Steamed rice would be a tiny bit healthier than fried rice, only because of the oil used to fry the fried rice. However, they usually don't use a lot of oil to fry the rice. And the oil and the fats themselves are not what "makes you fat" per se. Rather it's the rice that makes you fat - believe it or not.

Even brown rice will make you fat if it's not "whole grain." (like the uncle Ben's minute rice kind - brown rice but still fattening)

In short, what they do with most rice after it's harvested is they send it for processing where they remove the germ which is the part of the rice that contains the fiber. The processing makes the rice taste better, but that fiber is what you need to slow down the digestion process and keep you full for longer.

If you are eating whole grain rices and pastas you'll notice that your stomach stays full much longer and that causes you to eat less! If you're eating processed rices and pastas, your body produces extra insulin to break down the natural sugars in the food. You digest it faster because the hearty fiber (the germ) has been removed and the whole thing moves from your stomach and out of your body much more quickly. It takes your body a lot longer to digest the fiber. That's the main reason all those low carb diets suggest eating less (or none at all) of rice and pasta. Without the original fiber the whole thing is just about junk food.

Eating fried rice a a restaurant is not a problem and should not be considered a health issue. It's not like you are living on fried rice everyday. The addition of the vegetables and condiments makes for a tastier meal and when eating out enjoying the food you eat is a lot healthier than worrying about the wholeness of it.

Obviously brown rice would be the best thing to eat because white rice is about as nutritious as a piece of paper. So if brown rice is not available then enjoy the fried rice. Many Health food fanatics get ulcers every year from worrying about what they eat. Many others die from the same diseases that other people die from. Eat healthy and stay healthy but don't worry about it.
