Sophie's Choice (1982) starring Meryl Streep

"Sophie is the survivor of Nazi concentration camps, who has found a reason to live in Nathan, a sparkling if unsteady American Jew obsessed with the Holocaust. They befriend Stingo, the movie's narrator, a young American writer new to New York City. But the happiness of Sophie and Nathan is endangered by her ghosts and his obsessions."

Sophie's Choice was one of the most heartbreaking movies I think I've ever seen, and one of Meryl Streep's most outstanding performances. Sophie must make a gut-wrenching decision that haunts her the rest of her life. I cry just thinking about it.

All the movies suggested so far are worth seeing. Here are some more:

"Korczak" (by Andrzej Wajda; Spielberg's "Schindler's List" owes a lot to this)

"Katyn" (Wajda's latest; nominated for an Oscar this year)

"Jakob the Liar" (with Robin Williams; an even better "comic" treatment of the Holocaust than "Life Is Beautiful")

    "Europa, Europa"

"Bent" (with Clive Owen, about Nazi persecution of gays)

"Holocaust" (TV miniseries with Meryl Streep and James Woods)

'Playing for Time" (TV movie, with Vanessa Redgrave)

"The Truce" (John Turturro as Primo Levi)

    "Lodz Ghetto" (documentary)

    "The Last Days" (documentary)

    "Shoah" (documentary)

    "Night and Fog" (documentary)

    "Mr. Death" (documentary)
