You would want to mix running and weight lifting in. If you want to look good fast I would start by lifting for strength and hypertrophy (6-10 reps) which will show faster than trying to build lean muscle (~12 reps). This doesn't make you lose fat initially but it does help by building your chest and back muscles which when dressed will make you look skinnier by comparison. I would recommend breaking it into chest, triceps, biceps, back, shoulders and abs; and do about five different exercises for each of those categories and do about 2 of them every time you go to the gym. By building muscle you'll also up the daily calorie intake which could cause you to lose weight.
Running is the best way to get in better shape faster because running will cause you to breath more than most other endurance exercises which usually helps the stomach muscles give that flat look (while sit ups will make them look more defined). Running will usually give you the best results if you can sustain it for over 15-20 minutes, when you body will switch from burning mostly stored sugar to stored fat. Most people believe that the best times to run are in the morning before breakfast and after doing a workout, but I can't back that up
