    Message In a Bottle

    Part 1 The Passage

Did you ever write a message, put it in a bottle, and then drop it into a river or the ocean hoping that someday someone might find it and read your message? If not, you might be tempted to do so after reading about the fate of one such message.

A young soldier setting off to war in Europe at the beginning of World War 1 wrote a short love letter to his wife in England to let her know that he was thinking about her on the eve of battle.

It read: “Dear Wife, I am writing this note on this boat and dropping it into the sea just to see if it will reach you. If it does, sign this envelope on the right- hand bottom corner where it says receipt.

Put the date and hour of receipt and your name where it says signature and look after it well. Ta ta sweet, for the present. Your hubby.” The soldier then tossed the bottle into the English Channel.

Eighty- five years later, in the spring of 1999, a fisherman found the bottle at the mouth of the Thames River in England. Upon opening it, he found the message, along with a cover letter that read:

“Sir or madam, youth or maid. Would you kindly forward the enclosed letter and earn the blessing of a poor. British soldier on his way to the front this ninth day of September, 1914.” His signature and army rank followed, as well as his military address.

The fisherman did as he was bid. The wife of course was already dead, but he discovered that there was a daughter who had been two years old when the message had been written, two days before the writer died in battle in France.

Diligent investigation disclosed that the daughter, now an elderly woman herself, was living in New Zealand and so, with the assistance of a local newspaper there, he traveled to, New Zealand to deliver the message.

The meeting with the daughter was photographed for the paper and was very emotional. She of course was very moved to receive a letter from a father she could barely remember as it was another link to hi, and helped to fill the void which his absence in her life had created.

Indeed, it is the case that truth is often stranger than fiction.
